FISHING METHODS USED IN MOGAN

The Line (la liña)

The line is perhaps the oldest fishing method used in the Canary Islands. It consists of submerging a nylon line with hooks attached to it in the sea. Although initially the line was pulled in manually, nowadays, in most cases, electric reels are used.

The Net (la Nasa)

The net is also a fishing system with a long tradition in the islands. It was probably already used, in a more rudimentary form, by the indigenous people. It was not until the 1940s that its current measurements and shapes were standardised. It consists of a trap, usually circular, with one or more entrances through which the fish can enter. It is made of metal mesh and its size varies depending on the size of the boat from which it is launched into the sea and the species to be caught.
