OUR LADY OF CARMEN, A SEAFARING TRADITION

The fishing tradition of Mogán has always been linked to the worship of Our Lady of Carmen. In 1901, Pope Leo XIII recognised Our Lady of Carmen as the patron saint of sailors and, in the same year, the Spanish Navy declared itself under her protection.

16 July, the day of the Virgin of Carmen, is celebrated in a very special way in Mogán. Among the activities organised to commemorate this date, the maritime and land processions stand out, in which the images of the Virgin of Carmen, kept in Arguineguín and on Mogán Beach, travel along the coast of the municipality until they meet. There, one of the most emotional moments of the celebration takes place: the greeting between the two Virgins before thousands of excited worshippers who wait devoutly for this special moment to arrive.
