FISHING METHODS USED IN MOGAN
The “traíña”
The traíña is a rectangular net measuring approximately 300 metres long and 45 metres wide. At the bottom, it has a rope with rings, called a jareta, which allows it to be closed to prevent fish from escaping through the lower part. To use it, a base boat and two support boats are required. The traíña is launched into the sea, with one end tied to the base boat while the other is spread out in a U-shape by one of the support boats. The other boat is positioned at an equal distance between the two and turns on powerful lights to attract the fish. The net is then closed by bringing the two ends of the traíña together at the base vessel, from where it is collected.
The Longline (“palangre”)
The longline is a horizontal line from which other vertical lines with hooks attached hang at regular intervals. They can reach up to 1,600 metres in length and currently cannot have more than 500 hooks on their hanging arms.
