FISHING METHODS USED IN MOGAN

The trasmallo or cazonal

The trasmallo consists of 1, 2 or 3 walls of net between 65 and 80 metres long and between 1 and 2 metres high. The most commonly used in the Canary Islands has only one wall and is placed horizontally in the sea so that fish become entangled in it. According to fishing legislation, each panel or wall cannot measure more than 50 metres.

The chinchorro

The chinchorro enjoyed a long tradition as a fishing system on our coasts until it was banned in 1986. It consists of a mesh cup connected to two side pieces of net that are tied to two ropes. One of them was left fixed on land and the other, from a boat, was used to make a 180-degree turn in front of the coast. The chinchorro was then retrieved from the shore. Many people who were not fishermen used to take part in this operation and were rewarded for their help with part of the catch with less commercial value. It was banned because of the damage caused to the seabed by the dragging of the nets.
